Pfizer has demonstrated a commitment to improving health in China by introducing over 50 innovative drugs, conducting educational healthcare programs, responding to healthcare needs during and after natural disasters, supporting community health initiatives and actively promoting healthcare development and reform. Part of promoting a healthy life is protecting the environment in which we live, that is why we also actively work to reduce our impact on the planet, reducing carbon emissions and consumption of resources.
Pfizer always advocates performing the obligation of the corporate citizen, and assumes the social responsibilities for our stakeholders and the community where we work and live through various CSR programs.
We increased access to Sutent for low-income patients and increased healthcare capacity for two difficult-to-treat cancers through the Sutent Patient Assistance Program (SPAP) in partnership with the Cancer Foundation of China and the Axios Foundation.
In 2006 and 2007, we collaborated with the Zhejiang Center for Disease Control and Prevention to form a disease management team. Pfizer later collaborated with the Shanghai Center for Disease Control and Prevention to carry out disease management programs.
In 2008, we collaborated with the Cardiovascular Disease Control Center of the Ministry of Health to launch a community chronic disease prevention and control project.
In 2010, We cooperated with Beijing Health Bureau to launch “Be a Healthier Beijing Citizen – Mother and Infant Health Action” Campaign, a joint collaboration between Pfizer's Vaccines and Nutritionals business
We increased capacity in community health centers and helped over 15,000 patients manage chronic disease and lower blood pressure. Pfizer's Disease Management Program (DMaP) has demonstrated a scientific, cost-effective and replicable model for chronic disease management.
Global Health Programs
We conducted a successful smoking cessation program through Pfizer's Global Health Partnerships, supplying the model for the Chinese Government's decision to make all hospitals in China smoke-free by 2011.
Grants and Contributions
o We donated over RMB 6.45 million in the last decade to the Chinese Foundation for Lifeline Express, an organization that provides free cataract operations in remote and poverty-stricken areas of China.
Partnering with Regulatory Agencies and Health Care Professionals
We established strong partnerships with enforcement and regulatory agencies in an effort to detect and disrupt major manufacturers and distributors of counterfeit Pfizer products.
We worked closely with the State Food and Drug Administration (SFDA) on many projects to address tampered medicine, counterfeits from online pharmacies.
Protecting the Environment
We slowed the growth of our greenhouse gas emissions and water consumption and decreased our waste by 9.2 percent.
We reduced annual energy consumption by 8 percent at our Dalian plant through eight energy-saving projects, saving 5,084 megawatt hours and reducing carbon dioxide emissions by 2,835 tons.
We completed the construction of a new infant nutritional products facility in Suzhou, for which Suzhou Industrial Park awarded a “Green Building” prize.
We continuously conduct environmental, health and safety (EHS) assessments of new suppliers and regularly assess our key suppliers to ensure that sourcing decisions comply with the Pharmaceutical Supply Chain Initiative, a group of pharmaceutical companies who share the goal of helping suppliers achieve better EHS and labor performance.
Widely Recognized CSR Contributions
The Red Cross Society of China honored Pfizer with a “Special Contribution Award” for its humanitarian response to the Wenchuan earthquake in Sichuan Province in 2009, making Pfizer the only multinational company in the pharmaceutical industry to receive this award. In 2010, Pfizer also donated RMB 5 million for the relief work of earthquake which struck Yushu County, Qinghai Province.
Pfizer China was ranked No. 21 on the “2009 Corporation Charity Chart”, an annual list published by the Philanthropy Times. Out of the more than 850 domestic and international businesses evaluated on the list, Pfizer was the only pharmaceutical company in the Top 50.
We were ranked among the “Top 10 China Philanthropy Outstanding Contribution Organizations” out of 2,000 multinational and domestic corporations in 2009. Pfizer is the only MNC to have won this award.
